YouTube Red is here: Seven things to know about our new subscription service

Today in the U.S. we’re launching YouTube Red to give your fans a new way to enjoy YouTube, and creators an additional way to earn money from their videos. There's been some helpful guidance out there on how to think about YouTube Red but here are seven things we think every creator should know:

1. The YouTube you know and love is here to stay. Your fans can still enjoy your content on YouTube for free and you’ll get paid from the ad revenue generated, as always.

2. A new option for viewers. YouTube Red allows fans to watch videos uninterrupted without ads, save them offline and play in the background while still supporting creators through their membership fee. And as a special bonus - YouTube Red works with Google Play Music, so users who subscribe to one automatically get access to the other.
3. A new source of revenue. Starting today, with the launch of YouTube Red, our creator community will make as much or more money on YouTube than they would have without it. And on a per-user basis, a paying YouTube Red member will generate more money for creators than a typical ad-viewing, free user.

4. Let’s talk about free trials. Creators are the lifeblood of YouTube. So with Google Play Music subscribers instantly joining YouTube Red, we will pay a portion of the revenue we receive from these subscribers to our creators on day 1. Even with 30 day free trials, our creator community will make as much or more as they would have without YouTube Red.

5. Participating in YouTube Red doesn’t cost creators a thing. Whether or not you personally decide to pay for a YouTube Red membership, your videos can still be a part of YouTube Red and you’ll still be able to earn new revenue from your viewers’ membership fees.

6. Creators don’t need to do anything differently for YouTube Red. Some creators have asked whether they need to make longer videos to make money on YouTube Red. The most important factor is that your videos are engaging and people spend time watching them and sharing them with more people. In other words - we see plenty of short-form videos that get way more overall watch time than long-form videos because they’re more engaging and shareable.

7. Now your fans can enjoy your videos in more ways. With YouTube Red, your fans can engage with your content more. They can take your videos with them wherever they’re headed, whether or not they have an Internet connection. They can keep your videos playing in the background on their phones while answering text messages or looking up directions. We’re just getting started, but we think YouTube Red is going to be great for both you and your fans.

A friendly reminder and monetization advice

We’re always working to bring to you the latest tips and updates so you can make the most of your YouTube experience. One of the benefits of being a YouTube partner is your ability to monetize your uploaded content, and we have a few best practices and guidelines to help you understand the monetization process. Read on to review some of the commonly-asked questions and our suggestions for how you can maximize your YouTube earnings!

Keep in mind these monetization basics:

  • Create an AdSense account. You can enable video monetization and display ads without associating an AdSense account with YouTube, but in order to be paid you’ll need to create - and associate - an AdSense account.
  • Enable relevant ad formats. Set your monetization ad defaults, and allow all ad types that are relevant for your videos.
  • Look at the monetization symbol next to your video.
    • Videos with a grey “$” button are not yet monetized.
    • Videos with a green “$” button have been enabled for monetization
    • Videos with an orange “!” symbol next to them indicate that YouTube might need more information to approve your video for monetization. In that case, check your Video Manager and your e-mail.
  • Make sure you own commercial use rights before you monetize.
    • Whenever possible, take the opportunity to be creative - create your own unique audio and visuals!
    • If you want to monetize a video that contains audio or visuals you didn’t personally create, you’ll need the content creator to provide express written permission for commercial use. If you have written permission to use third-party material, be sure to mention/include it when you publish a video or when asked to provide information for monetization.
    • Check the licenses for any audio you include, and where possible, use royalty-free music that's licensed for commercial use.
    • Remember that fair use is a tricky subject. Don't assume you can monetize third-party content because you’ve claimed it as fair use.

Going forward, don’t forget to:

  • Keep your AdSense account in good standing. Encouraging viewers to click on your ads, or clicking on them yourself, is strictly prohibited. Learn more here.
  • Do your homework to understand whether you actually own commercial use rights. Purchasing a song, game, or program may not mean you own the rights to monetize, and there could be consequences for claiming content you don't own.
  • Create family-friendly content that advertisers want to sponsor. Keep in mind some advertisers have a family audience and may not want their ads appearing next to content containing profanity, offensive, or derogatory language/images.
  • Review our policies. Make sure you’re familiar with our spam policies and avoid spamming your viewers.
  • Follow our audience development best practices outlined in the Creator Playbook to build your fan base and increase views and watch time. Using misleading tags, thumbnails, and metadata may give your fans a negative viewing experience, reduce your watch time, and could affect your monetization status.

Thanks again for helping make the YouTube partner community so vibrant. We hope you find these tips useful, and if you have any additional questions, don’t forget about the resources YouTube makes available: monetization tips and audience development best practices abound in the YouTube Help Center, the Playbook, the Partner Forum, theCreator Hub, the YouTube Creators channel and here on the YouTube Creator Blog.

Connecting with your viewers on the new YouTube app for iPhone and iPod touch

We’re launching a new app for iPhone and iPod that helps viewers find your channel, and gives them more ways to enjoy and share your videos. The new YouTube app helps iPhone users:

  • Watch your channel instantly: We’ve integrated a swipe-out guide so your subscribers can now instantly access your channel.
  • Find videos faster: We’ve bulked up search tools, like auto-suggesting videos and searching specifically for channels.
  • Share with others: Viewers can now share directly on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, email, or text message from within the app.

You can use the app on your iPad too, but stay tuned for a made-for-iPad experience in the coming months.

To help your audience get the best experience on iOS, download the app, and encourage your audience to do the same by annotating this link: http://itunes.apple.com/app/youtube/id544007664

Being a YouTube Creator Just Got Even More Rewarding

Some videos reach millions of viewers, while others satisfy the appetite of a precise, yet passionate audience. Whether you want to become a global pop star, create theUltimate Frisbee Channelteach math to students around the world, or publicly muse on your daily life, you can do it on YouTube. Partners are already producing videos that draw large and loyal audiences while building careers for themselves. But we know that there are many more creators out there with talents to share, and we want to empower them to achieve their goals, whatever they may be.

So starting today, we are updating partner eligibility across 20 countries (listed below) where the YouTube Partner Program has launched. YouTube uploaders in these countries can become YouTube partners by enabling their YouTube accounts, andsuccessfully monetizing at least one of their videos. You can start your journey as a YouTube partner by reviewing the terms and opting in your account here. Read here for more information.

This change will be in effect today in the countries listed below, and we’ll work to make it more broadly available in countries where the YouTube Partner Program has launched:
  • Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States
Your journey as a YouTube partner is what you make of it. Whether you’re aiming to score your next million subscribers or just want to learn about the best times to upload videos, there are resources tailored to your needs.

To help you unlock your creativity and further develop your skills, there’s:
  • Next Vlogger: A few weeks ago, we asked you which category we should choose for our NextUp program. You overwhelmingly selected YouTube Next Vlogger. Participants will receive one on one training from YouTube stars and industry leaders like iJustine, video equipment valued at $5,000, and global promotion on and off the YouTube. Apply by April 18.
  • Creator Clubs: Sign up for a Creator Club to network and collaborate with other creators in your area. And stay tuned for Partner Meetups to learn new skills directly from YouTube staff and experts.
  • YouTube Features: Whether you’re looking to improve your production quality or trying to create fun videos, you can use YouTube’s growing toolset to make videos the world will love.
To help you grow larger and more engaged audiences, there’s:
  • Partner Promotion: Certain creators who were partners prior to April 10th may be eligible to receive free advertising on the Google Display Network—websites that cover more than 92 percent of the Internet. Learn more in the Creator Hub. We hope to extend this feature to additional partners over time.
  • Creator Playbook 2: The YouTube Creator Playbook 2 is the latest version of the definitive YouTube audience development guide. Find it atyoutube.com/playbook.
  • Creators On the Rise: The On the Rise Program offers high potential up-and-coming partners with homepage, editorial and social media promotion. Look out for opportunities to participate every month.
[Update] We're excited to provide more creators with the opportunity to become partners and have access to programs and resources to help them be successful onYouTube. These programs will be tailored to partners based on their specific needs. We also recognize that custom thumbnails and banners are sought-after features by many creators. We are working on making these and other features available to more newly-made partners over time, like we have done with long uploads and monetization.

You can stay on top of all creator news at the Creator Hub (youtube.com/creators). To help you better discover new opportunities, all partner initiatives will be identified with the new gold play icon. The icon symbolizes the heart of YouTube: you and your content.

If you’re willing to work hard and create videos that entertain, inspire, educate and amaze, then you can find success on YouTube. Whether you’re a novice or a mogul, we’re committed to helping you meet your goals as a YouTube partner.

Mobile Live Streaming + Super Chat = Live (Streaming) the Dream

A huge focus for us here at YouTube is to find new ways to let creators and viewers interact with each other and the videos they watch. And that's why we’ve supported live streaming since, well, before Beyoncé even had a baby – way back in 2011! And in 2016, we witnessed the most-viewed political live streams of all time – the 2016 U.S. presidential debates – and we launched the world’s first 360-degree live streaming support with full 4K video, at scale and for free.

So what’s next? The roll out of our new mobile live streaming feature to every creator with more than 10,000 subscribers (the rest of you will have it soon!). It’s a launch that’ll put the power of live streaming in the hands of hundreds of thousands of talented creators, giving them a more intimate and spontaneous way to share their thoughts, lives, and creativity.

Mobile live streaming has been built directly into the YouTube mobile app. All you have to do to start streaming is open YouTube, hit the capture button, and you’re live! Streamed videos will have all the same features as regular YouTube videos. They can be searched for, found via recommendations or playlists, and protected from unauthorized use. Our mobile live streaming uses YouTube’s rock-solid infrastructure, meaning it’ll be fast and reliable, just the YouTube you know and love. And we’ve been working hand-in-hand with hundreds of creators to refine the mobile streaming experience while they stream from a boat or take live calls from their fans. Based on their feedback, we did things like slowing down live chat (it turns out receiving 2,000 messages per second is a little too fast!) and pushing for better streaming quality across devices.

Show me the money

To help creators earn revenue from live streaming, we’re also excited to launch Super Chat, a new live stream monetization tool available to creators in more than 20 countries (and viewers in more than 40 countries). Super Chat is like paying for that front-row seat in the digital age: it lets any fan watching a live stream stand out from the crowd and get a creator’s attention by purchasing chat messages that are highlighted in bright colors and stay pinned to the top of the chat window for up to five hours. Super Chat gives viewers a chance to add a little visual flair to their chats and gives creators a new way to keep connected to their fans while earning a little money on the side, let’s say for example, while shopping at Target or playing video games :)

Thundermist Lures is your October partner On The Rise!

Congratulations to the team over at Thundermist Lures, our featured “On The Rise” partner for this month. Their channel and several of their videos are in the spotlight on the On The Rise homepage and the YouTube home channel today.

Thundermist Lure Company’s team of professional anglers - Claudio, Ivo, and Phil - have been fishing for over 40 years. Their combined wealth of knowledge makes them expert guides when it comes to fishing tackle and methods, not to mention fishing for different types of fish and in different types of water! Whether you’re new to the sport or you’re out there winning tournaments every weekend, the team’s weekly videos are bound to entertain and educate. So why not check out a few of their videos? You can see how they reel ‘em in with the Viper Spoon or learn some secrets and tips about catching catfish. Of course, you may want to start with figuring out the best fishing rodfor your next catch before you hit the open water!

Here are a few words from Ivo, the host of “Thundermist Fishing Tips:”
We love sharing knowledge and different fishing tips/techniques with you on a regular basis. Spending quality time with family and friends on the water fishing is one of our favorite pastimes and we've been doing just that on YouTube since 2007. We are finding that more and more people are writing in with questions, as they want to spend more time enjoying our great outdoors and the sport of fishing. Thanks to all your positive feedback and support over the years, our YouTube channel continues to grow. [Being featured as YouTube’s On The Rise partner] is an honor that we would like to jointly share with you as we equally deserve such recognition. Thank you and as always, until next time, good luck and good fishing.
If you’ve enjoyed this monthly blog series and are interested in learning more or participating, we encourage you to visit our On The Rise homepage. You can check out all of our past featured partners on the Featured Partners tab, or nominate a YouTube partner to be considered for the program on the Nominate tab. Feel free to submit nominations for your own channel, or for channels you follow that you think deserve more attention or could be the next YouTube sensation. We’ll continue to feature promising partners who drive YouTube watch time, have fewer than 100,000 subscribers, and produce engaging content on a regular basis.

Improving Content ID

In the nearly five years since we launched Content ID, it has helped everyone from large media companies to up-and-coming creators manage their content when it appears on YouTube. More than 3,000 content owners have supplied more than 500,000 hours of reference files to the system. Content ID hasn’t stood still over the last five years. We’ve been rolling out regular updates and we want to highlight three particular efforts that we think improve Content ID for everyone.

A New Appeals Process
Users have always had the ability to dispute Content ID claims on their videos if they believe those claims are invalid. Prior to today, if a content owner rejected that dispute, the user was left with no recourse for certain types of Content ID claims (e.g., monetize claims). Based upon feedback from our community, today we’re introducing an appeals process that gives eligible users a new choice when dealing with a rejected dispute. When the user files an appeal, a content owner has two options: release the claim or file a formal DMCA notification.

Smarter Detection of Unintentional Claims
Content owners have uploaded more than ten million reference files to the Content ID system. At that scale, mistakes can and do happen. To address this, we’ve improved the algorithms that identify potentially invalid claims. We stop these claims from automatically affecting user videos and place them in a queue to be manually reviewed by the content owner. This process prevents disputes that arise when content not owned by a partner inadvertently turns up in a reference file.

Smarter claim detection minimizes unintentional mistakes. Of course, we take action in rare cases of intentional misuse, up to and including terminating Content ID access.

Improved Matching Quality
At the heart of Content ID is the matching technology that identifies partners’ content among all the videos on YouTube. Earlier this year we introduced a significant improvement to how the matching happens. We continue to work on ways to make the matching more precise through better algorithms and a more comprehensive reference library.

There is still a lot of work ahead of us, but we believe that these are significant steps forward in our efforts to keep YouTube a vibrant place where the rights of both content owners and users are protected and everyone can control their original content and make money from it - money which can be put towards the production of more great content.

For now, keep on watching, upload a video or two and please, please keep the feedback coming.

Meet your On The Rise nominees for June

In our monthly On The Rise program, we identify four partners whose channels drive significant YouTube watch time but haven’t yet reached the 100,000 subscriber mark. Your interest has helped us find four partners who are getting closer to that milestone. They’re already driving a lot of watch time for YouTube, and you can help them grow their channels and audiences even more. It’s June, which means school is out, but our nominees this month could each teach you something new: learn how to coat your car in plastic, how to make an original greeting card, what happens when you add water to a super-absorbent polymer, or when to use “a lot” versus “allot” (versus “lots!”).

Here’s where you come in - you actually have the chance to help push these partners even further on YouTube. Review their videos below, vote for your favorite here, and one of these candidates will have the opportunity to be featured across YouTube later this month. In addition to your votes, each channel will be evaluated on criteria such as viewer engagement and channel optimization techniques to decide which partner we’ll feature.

In past months, featured On The Rise partners like ManjulasKitchen andhauntedsunshinegirl have gained many subscribers and seen their careers take off, in large part due to your support. This month’s poll will be open until June 11, 5pm PT, so don’t forget to vote for your favorite channel. Check back to see which channel will be featured on June 28.

starofmay is our On The Rise featured partner for June!

Congratulations to Kristina Werner, our featured “On The Rise” partner for June 2013. Her channel, starofmay, is featured today in the YouTube spotlight as well as our On The Rise homepage.

With a background in graphic design, Kristina has always had an eye for aesthetics. Her channel hosts over 500 videos dedicated to cardmaking and multimedia craft projects. Kristina’s videos contain eye-catching and easy-to-follow instructions as she teaches viewers the nuance in homemade card design. You can learn how to create a card using leftover ribbons and scraps or how different crafting tools and supplies compare. Love the idea of hand-crafted cards, but worried that your chicken scratch might make it turn out like a doctor’s prescription pad? Fear not - Kristina even has videos that willhelp make your handwriting worthy of the elegant cards you create. Learn more about Kristina’s channel and check out some of her other favorite videos below.

And here are some words from Kristina directly:
The very first video I posted on YouTube was a knot-tying video way back in October 2007, which was later re-uploaded with different audio. (Be nice!) Who knew where that would lead to six years later! To this day I think video is the best way to teach and share the cardmaking process, and YouTube has allowed me and thousands of other papercrafters the opportunity to share our love of cardmaking with people all over the world! We crafters are a friendly and creative bunch, and I'm so happy to share cardmaking with even more people. I want to thank each and every one of my subscribers for their support. You guys are awesome!

MathMeeting is “On The Rise” this month

Congratulations to Chris Seber of MathMeeting, our featured On The Rise partner this July. You’ll see his channel and videos in the spotlight on the On The Rise homepageand the YouTube home channel today.

School is out for many of us in July, but that doesn’t mean you can’t brush up on the basics! With just under 200 videos on his mathematics-focused channel, Chris just may be the man to help. He’s been running this YouTube channel since December 2010, posting tutorials to help mathematicians at every level expand their skill set. Whether you want a refresher on how to multiply fractions or factor trinomials, Chris has videos that can walk you through each step. He might even be able to help you solve that Rubik’s cube you’ve been working on! Math students and teachers alike will appreciate the clear visuals and steady pace that Chris has developed in these videos.

Here are a few words directly from Chris:
My passion is to help as many students AND teachers as possible in the subject of Mathematics. I do this by making free videos here on YouTube ranging from basic level math through upper level Calculus. I do not expect everybody to fall in love with mathematics, but I wholeheartedly believe that everybody enjoys learning when it is taught in a simple, easy-to-follow manner. My simple approach to teaching has received such positive, uplifting reactions from my audience. Your comments and votes have helped me become featured as a “On The Rise” featured partner for the month of July. This is such a humbling achievement that I am most proud of. I will continue making videos to assist you in your mathematical struggles for as long as possible. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Here are a few words from Beth:
I started vlogging in 2006 and as I was vlogging, I would sometimes make a craft while chatting, or take my subscribers into the kitchen with me when making dinner. About three years ago, my sister and I decided that we would open a channel focusing on fast and easy cooking, baking and crafting, sometimes mixing in a little bit of humor and island flavors. I am amazed at how many incredible people from all over the world that I get to meet on a daily basis. I am so thankful to my awesome subscribers and friends who constantly support me through all of my endeavors. You.are.the.best!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
